Making Their Mark
An Exhibition of the Shah Garg Collection · New York, NY · 2023–2024
Before founding Bureau.Art, Sarah Daoui served as Exhibition Manager for Making Their Mark: Works from the Shah Garg Collection, the inaugural public presentation of the collection of Komal Shah and Gaurav Garg. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, Artistic Director of the 59th Venice Biennale and Director & Chief Curator of High Line Art in New York, the landmark exhibition brought together more than eighty women artists across nearly eight decades. Presented in New York from 2023 to 2024, Making Their Mark welcomed more than 50,000 visitors before beginning an institutional tour across the United States. Daoui managed the exhibition’s day-to-day operations, hired and led a team of ten gallery assistants, and built its private visit and educational programming. She personally coordinated more than one hundred bespoke visits for museum groups, collectors, artists, fashion houses, and cultural leaders, welcoming groups from institutions including MoMA, the Whitney Museum, the Guggenheim, and major international fashion houses such as Chanel and Cartier. Daoui also developed the exhibition’s educational program in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, welcoming more than 500 New York City public school students and over 100 visual arts teachers. She led exhibition visits and programming designed to bring the histories and practices of the women artists on view into the classroom, and later continued consulting on curriculum development for the Department of Education. To extend the exhibition beyond its physical space, Daoui built out Making Their Mark on Google Arts & Culture, developing and curating more than ten digital stories around the exhibition, its artists, and educational initiatives. The platform created a lasting and accessible resource for audiences to engage with the collection beyond New York. The experience became formative to the approach Daoui later developed through Bureau.Art, where exhibition-making extends beyond the installation itself to encompass access, education, community, and meaningful encounters with art.
