Artist Conversation with Trent Munson and Leyla Fi · New York, NY · 2025
Presented in New York, Solace brought together artists Trent Munson and Leyla Fischer for an intimate conversation on grief, memory, and the ways artists transform deeply personal histories into visual language. Moderated by Bureau.Art founder Sarah Daoui, the conversation centered on two bodies of work shaped by loss. Munson’s I Still Hold Your Weight draws from family archives, photographs, projections, and objects to understand and memorialize his late brother, Trevor. Fischer’s Silent Echoes, a series of Doberman paintings begun in her childhood bedroom and completed on the day of her father’s passing, considers the animal as a symbol of protection, quiet strength, and emotional refuge. Despite growing up in very different cultural contexts, the artists found common ground in the experience of grief as something often left unspoken. Together, they discussed the instinct to preserve a person, feeling, or moment through image-making. The conversation marked Bureau.Art’s first artist talk and extended beyond the discussion with works by Fischer presented throughout the space and limited-edition prints by both artists. The program reflects Bureau’s commitment to creating spaces where audiences can encounter artists beyond the finished work and enter more deeply into the experiences that shape their practices.
