Bureau found ourselves in Cairo for the launch of ANŪT, an Egyptian design platform celebrating the country’s heritage and craftsmanship through collaborations with artisans across Egypt. The launch brought us to the Egyptian Museum for an unforgettable evening among the antiquities, followed by a few days discovering the city through the lens of ANŪT. Our visit also coincided with Art Cairo, giving us the opportunity to discover local galleries, meet artists, and experience a contemporary art scene that feels deeply connected to the city around it. Cairo is a place where thousands of years of history sit alongside an incredibly alive contemporary culture. Below are some of the places that made us fall in love with the city.

Egyptian architect Ramses Wissa Wassef designed this mud-brick complex to encourage young locals to weave and sculpt. The center remains active and is known for its distinct improvisational weaving style that can be seen both in progress and finished throughout the space.

While the new Grand Egyptian Museum opened across the pyramids of Giza in 2025, the Museum of Egyptian Antiquities remains a central feature of Downtown Cairo. Stacks of ancient Egyptian wonders are sprawled throughout a dilapidated neoclassical hall.

Honoring the legacy of Egyptian craft and design, Anut Cairo partners up with local Egyptian artisans to create homeware collections. Their Zamalek outpost showcases a variety of ceramics and glassware, as well as delicately embroidered tablecloths and tapestries that tow the line between art and design.

In the 80s and 90s, Dahshur was the secret spot for Egyptians to meet their crushes away from the crowds. Unlike the busy Giza Pyramids, here you can sit and soak in the quiet power of the pyramids - believed to hold magical healing energy - alone for hours.
